How It Works

From your first call to working keys — four steps, 15-30 min typical from dispatch to done.

01

Call with year, make, model, and VIN

The VIN lets us pre-cut the right blank before dispatch — saves 30+ minutes on-site. We lock in the flat price on the phone. No surprises at the door.

02

Mobile unit dispatched

We arrive in 15–30 minutes with the right key blank, NASTF-certified programming equipment, and extraction tools — fully equipped for whatever the job turns out to be.

03

Work done on-site

Cut, program, extract, or repair right at your location — driveway, parking lot, apartment complex, highway shoulder. Most jobs finish in 30–60 minutes.

04

You pay only after it works

We confirm the key starts the car and every button on the fob works before we collect payment. You leave confident the job is done.

Why Not Just Go to the Dealer?

40–75% cheaper, same key

Dealer key replacement for a late-model RAV4 typically costs two to three times what we charge for the same key, programmed with the same NASTF-certified credentials — at your driveway. Same output, different business model.

No tow truck required

Dealers can't help until the car is in their bay. If you're locked out or have no working key, that means $150–$250 in towing before they even start. We come to your vehicle — driveway, parking lot, roadside — and handle everything there.

Same day vs. 2–5 day wait

Most dealer service departments are booked 2–5 days out for key programming. We typically arrive within 30 minutes and finish the same visit. No rental car, no arranging a ride, no losing a workday.

Flat-rate pricing, locked in on the phone

Dealer service advisors quote "starting at" figures that inflate at the counter. We give you the final number on the phone — year, make, model, key type, price. It doesn't change when we arrive. You either say yes on the phone or you don't — there's no pressure.

Before You Try It Yourself — What DIY Actually Costs

We fix a lot of DIY attempts, and the repair always costs more than the service would have. Here’s what the videos and marketplace listings don’t tell you.

Coat hangers and slim jims damage modern doors

Old-school unlocking tools were designed for cars from the 1990s. Modern doors route airbag sensors, window regulators, and lock actuator wiring exactly where a slim jim slides — one wrong pull and you've turned an easy unlock into a $400–$900 door repair. We use inflatable wedges and long-reach tools that never touch the internals, and the unlock is damage-free or it's free.

Wedge-and-rod videos bend your door frame

The YouTube trick of prying the door corner open with a wedge works — once. What the video doesn't show is the permanently deformed weather stripping and door frame that follow: wind noise at highway speed, water leaks, and a door that never seals quite right again. Body shops charge far more to fix a bent frame than any lockout ever costs.

Marketplace fobs often can't be programmed at all

That $25 'OEM' fob online is a gamble: many used smart fobs are one-time-pair and permanently locked to their first vehicle, and aftermarket clones frequently ship the wrong frequency or firmware for your exact year and trim. Dealers refuse customer-supplied fobs outright. We'll check a listing for you before you buy — or supply a fob from our stock that's guaranteed to program.

DIY onboard programming ended around 2010

The 'turn the ignition 8 times' self-programming procedures floating around the internet only apply to some vehicles from the 2000s. Nearly everything newer requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port and, for secure gateway vehicles, NASTF-credentialed access to the manufacturer's key codes. No sequence of ignition turns will program a modern proximity key.

Super glue makes a broken key permanent

A key snapped in the lock or ignition feels like a job for glue — until the glue bonds the fragment to the pins and turns a quick extraction into a full cylinder replacement. If your key breaks off, stop, don't insert anything else, and call. Extraction with the right tools takes minutes and saves the cylinder.

The "$19 locksmith" ad is a bait-and-switch

Search-ad locksmiths advertising $15–$29 service calls are a documented national scam: the price quadruples on arrival, the 'technician' drills a lock that could have been picked, and there's no license to complain to. Protect yourself the easy way — ask for an NC locksmith license number (ours is #3024) and a flat all-in price on the phone before anyone is dispatched. We quote the final number up front; it doesn't change at your car.

Already locked out or holding half a key? Don’t force it — call (336) 790-2233 and we’ll quote the fix before we roll. See also our damage-free car lockout service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a car lockout cost in Charlotte?

It depends on the vehicle — high-security and some European models take more work than a standard unlock. We quote the exact flat price on the phone before we dispatch, and it doesn't change when we arrive.

Can you make a car key without the original?

Yes. We derive the key cut from your VIN — visible on your dashboard (driver's side, base of the windshield) or on the door jamb sticker. For most vehicles we cut and program a complete new key with no original required. This is our all-keys-lost service. It takes 30–60 minutes longer than a spare-key job, but costs the same or only slightly more.

Do you service European luxury cars?

Case-by-case. BMW: we cover most years — see our BMW key service page for the full breakdown. Mercedes-Benz: we cover models up to 2014 (pre-FBS4 immobilizer) — see our Mercedes-Benz page. Volkswagen: up to 2018 (pre-MQB-Evo). Audi and Porsche: call with your VIN for an honest 30-second answer. No dispatch fee if the answer is no.

How long does car key programming take?

Most jobs: 30–60 minutes from the time we arrive. Honda and Toyota transponder keys: 15–30 min. Smart / proximity keys: 30–45 min. All-keys-lost scenarios add 15–30 minutes. We give you an accurate estimate on the phone.

Can you come to my parking lot or workplace?

Yes — wherever your car is. Driveway, parking deck, apartment lot, office building, grocery store, highway shoulder. If you're safe and the car is accessible, we service it there. We cover Charlotte metro and all Lake Norman communities.

Do I need to tow my car to you?

Almost never. The only situation that may require a tow is a catastrophic ignition failure where the car physically can't be repositioned — and we still diagnose on-site first to confirm. Over 95% of our calls are handled at the customer's location.

Can you program a key fob I bought online?

Sometimes — but be careful before you buy. Many used smart fobs are permanently locked to the first vehicle they were paired with and physically cannot be reprogrammed, and aftermarket listings often ship the wrong frequency or FCC ID variant for your exact trim and year. Call us with the listing before you order and we'll tell you if it will work. Keys and fobs from our own stock are guaranteed to program and are covered by our workmanship warranty.

What information do I need when I call?

Three things: your vehicle's year, make, and model; your VIN if you can see it (dashboard at the base of the windshield, driver's side, or the door jamb sticker); and your location. With the VIN we pre-cut the right blank before dispatch and lock in your flat price on the phone — the number doesn't change when we arrive.

Is it cheaper to get a spare key now or wait until I lose my only key?

Getting a spare now is significantly cheaper. With a working key in hand, a spare is a quick 30–60 minute job. Lose your only key and you're into all-keys-lost territory — a longer, costlier job, and if it happens away from home you may be stranded until we arrive. One in three of our all-keys-lost calls tells us they'd been meaning to get a spare.

My car is push-to-start and I lost every key. Can you still help?

Yes. Push-to-start vehicles with zero working keys are a routine job for us — we derive the emergency blade cut from your VIN, program a new proximity fob through the OBD port with NASTF-credentialed equipment, and erase the lost keys from the immobilizer so they can never start your car. No dealer visit, no tow, no week-long wait.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold North Carolina locksmith license #3024, carry $1,000,000 in liability insurance, and are bonded. Our technicians program keys with NASTF (National Automotive Service Task Force) credentials — the same secure-data access dealers use. Ask any locksmith for their NC license number before they touch your car; if they won't give it, don't let them.

Will my old key still work after you make a new one?

If we're adding a spare — yes, every existing key keeps working. If you've lost a key and are worried someone might have it, we recommend the opposite: during an all-keys-lost style reprogram we erase the missing key from the immobilizer, so whoever finds it holds a useless piece of plastic. Tell us which outcome you want and we'll program accordingly.
