Schlage keypad lock installed on a Charlotte home by My Locksmith Express

Why Charlotte homeowners call us

  • Owner-operated, licensed, insured. NC Locksmith License #3024, $1,000,000 liability coverage, and the same background-checked crew on every job — no third-party subcontractors sent to your door.
  • Flat quote before we drive. The price you hear on the phone is the price you pay at the door. No trip fees, no “it turned out to be harder” surprises — that bait-and-switch is exactly what gives locksmiths a bad name.
  • Real local work. The photo is one of ours — a keypad smart lock installed on a Charlotte home. See more in the Huntersville smart-lock case study and a Cornelius move-in rekey.
  • Straight answers. If a simple rekey solves it, we won’t sell you a smart lock you don’t need. If the lock you bought online is junk, we’ll say so before installing it.

Rekey or replace? The honest answer

The most common residential question — and the one where a dishonest locksmith makes the easiest money. Here’s how we actually decide:

Rekey when the hardware is fine

Just moved in, lost a key, ended a roommate situation, or fired a contractor who had a copy? If the locks themselves work smoothly, rekeying changes the pins inside so old keys stop working — for a fraction of replacement cost. Most Charlotte homes rekey every exterior door in under an hour.

Rekey vs replace — full guide

Replace when the lock is the problem

Sticking latch, key that needs jiggling, rust from Lake Norman humidity, or a builder-grade lock you can flex by hand — that hardware is telling you it's done. We replace it with Grade 2 or Grade 1 hardware matched to your door and finish.

Which deadbolt to buy — honest guide

One key for every door

Tired of a fat keyring? While rekeying we can pin every exterior lock to a single key — front door, back door, garage entry, storm door. One key, whole house. Ask for keyed-alike when you call.

What rekeying a house costs

How a home visit works

1

Call or text with what you need

Rekey, new deadbolt, smart lock, or a lockout — we quote a flat price on the phone before anyone drives. No trip fee, no diagnostic charge.

2

We come to your home, 15-30 min

A branded vehicle and a licensed tech with NC #3024 ID. For entry work we verify residence first — lease, deed, utility bill, or matching ID. That check protects you; it's why legitimate locksmiths exist.

3

Done on the spot, tested in front of you

New keys cut, every lock cycled and tested, old keys demonstrated dead. You pay the price quoted on the phone — card, Apple Pay, or cash.

Smart locks, installed right

We install and configure every major brand — paired to your phone, codes set up, auto-lock tested before we leave:

Cheap upgrades that actually stop break-ins

Most burglaries defeat the door frame, not the lock. These are the upgrades we recommend on nearly every home visit:

ANSI Grade 1 deadbolts

Most builder-installed bolts are Grade 3 — the lowest rating. A Grade 1 bolt with a 1-inch throw is the single cheapest upgrade against forced entry.

Reinforced strike plates

Doors rarely fail at the lock — they fail at the frame. A heavy-duty strike plate with 3-inch screws anchors the bolt into the stud, not just the trim.

Single-key convenience

Keyed-alike pinning across every exterior door, so one key runs the whole house — including garage side doors and detached buildings.

Smart lock + keypad combos

Codes for the kids and the dog walker, phone unlock for you, and a physical key backup for power outages. We set up auto-lock schedules before we leave.

Serving homeowners across Cornelius, Huntersville, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte and the whole Lake Norman corridor — from 1920s Davidson bungalows with mortise locks to new construction in Ballantyne.

Residential locksmith questions, answered

Should I rekey or replace my locks after buying a home?

Rekey, in almost every case. When you buy or rent a home in Charlotte, you have no idea how many key copies exist — previous owners, neighbors, cleaners, contractors. If the hardware is in good shape, rekeying makes every old key useless and costs far less than replacement. We replace only locks that are worn, damaged, or below the security grade you want.

How much does it cost to rekey a whole house?

Most 3-4 bedroom homes in the Charlotte and Lake Norman area have 3-5 exterior locks, and the whole-house rekey includes fresh keys and keyed-alike pinning (one key for every door). Tell us the lock count on the phone and we quote the exact flat price before we drive out.

How long does rekeying take?

About 10-15 minutes per lock. A typical whole-house rekey is done in under an hour, including cutting fresh keys and testing every door in front of you.

Can you make all my locks work with one key?

Yes — it's called keying alike, and we do it during any rekey at no extra charge, as long as the locks share a compatible keyway (most big-brand residential locks do). One key then opens the front door, back door, garage entry, and any other exterior lock we pin.

Which smart lock do you recommend?

For most Charlotte homes: Schlage Encode if you want built-in Wi-Fi with no hub, Yale Assure if you want a clean keypad look, August if you want to keep your existing deadbolt and add smarts inside. We install and pair whichever you choose — or bring one with us. If a smart lock is a bad fit for your door, we'll say so before you spend the money.

Do I need to be home for residential locksmith work?

Yes. For any entry, rekey, or lock change we verify you live there — a lease, deed, utility bill, or ID matching the address. It takes thirty seconds, and it's the reason you can trust a licensed locksmith with your home in the first place.

Can you open my house without damaging the lock?

In almost all cases, yes. We pick or bypass residential locks non-destructively — no drilling, no broken hardware, and the same key works afterward. Drilling is a genuine last resort reserved for failed or high-security cylinders, and we tell you before touching anything.

My key sticks or needs jiggling — can that be fixed?

Usually. A sticking lock is either a worn key, worn pins, or a misaligned strike — all fixable on-site for less than a replacement. If the cylinder is genuinely at end of life, we'll show you why and quote a replacement on the spot.

Do you install customer-supplied locks from Home Depot or Amazon?

Yes. We install hardware you've already bought, and we'll be honest about it — if the lock you picked is a low grade or a poor fit for the door, we'll tell you before it goes in, not after.

What areas do you cover for residential work?

The whole Charlotte metro and Lake Norman corridor: Cornelius, Huntersville, Davidson, Mooresville, Denver, Concord, Kannapolis, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, and Charlotte proper including Uptown, South End, NoDa, and Ballantyne. Mobile-only — we come to you, 24/7.
