Chevy is #4 by volume — led by Silverado, Tahoe, and Equinox
We've handled roughly 28 Chevrolet key jobs in the past 90 days — more than any other domestic brand. The Silverado accounts for the bulk: contractors and tradespeople running Silverados across Mooresville job sites and Concord warehouses, plus weekend Silverado owners heading to Lake Norman who discover a missing key at the boat ramp.
Tahoe and Suburban are the second big segment — family haulers in Davidson and Ballantyne where a lost or broken key means the whole household is stranded. The Equinox rounds out the top three as Charlotte's most common compact SUV, especially around University City and Mint Hill.
One Chevy specialty worth highlighting: older pre-2002 Chevys used VATS resistor keys — a unique GM anti-theft system that most locksmiths won't touch. We still identify and program VATS keys on-site, which matters for owners of classic Camaros, older Corvettes, and early Silverados.
Trim variability is the other Chevrolet complexity. A 2020 Silverado LT and a 2020 Silverado High Country are completely different key jobs — the LT typically uses a remote head key while the High Country uses a smart proximity system. VIN identification on the phone resolves this in 30 seconds before we dispatch.
Chevrolet key types — all 5 systems
Chevy spans more key technologies than most brands — including VATS, a legacy system most locksmiths no longer support.
Mechanical Key
Basic cut key without electronic components. Found on very old Chevrolet models before transponder technology became standard.
Pre-1990s models, some non-US-market fleet trims.
VATS Resistor Key
Vehicle Anti-Theft System — unique to older Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Buick vehicles. The key contains a resistor with one of 15 specific resistance values. The ignition reads the value electronically; wrong value = no start. NOT a chip key — it's a physical resistor embedded in the key blade.
Older pre-2002 Chevys (Camaro, Corvette, older Silverado, Caprice). Most locksmiths refuse VATS — we still do it. Requires on-vehicle test to identify correct resistor value.
Standard Transponder
GM's transponder key system. Chip in the key head communicates with the vehicle immobilizer. Must be cut and programmed. Used across many Silverado, Equinox, Malibu, and Tahoe trims.
Mid-range and base trim levels. Most common Chevy key type.
Remote Head Key
Lock/unlock buttons built into the key head. Blade plus remote in one unit.
Mid-tier Silverado LT, Equinox LT, Traverse mid-trims.
Smart Key / Proximity
GM's push-to-start system on premium Chevrolet trims. Walk-up unlock, push-button start.
Silverado High Country, Tahoe Premier/High Country, Traverse High Country. Same model year as transponder trims — trim level determines system.
Not sure which system your Chevy uses?
VIN identification on the phone confirms the exact factory key system in 30 seconds. Trim level is the most common source of confusion — especially on Silverado and Tahoe where the same model year spans multiple key types. Call (336) 790-2233 before assuming which key your vehicle needs.

Real-world Chevrolet key scenarios
Every Chevrolet job starts with trim identification — same year, different trims, completely different key systems.
2020 Chevy Silverado LT — lost only key at lake
LT trim = remote head key typically
2020 Chevy Silverado High Country — spare key
High Country = smart proximity. Same year as LT, completely different key.
2018 Chevy Tahoe Premier — all keys lost
Premier = smart key system
2015 Chevy Equinox LT — spare key for second driver
Working key present = duplicate rate
1997 Chevy Camaro Z28 — VATS key replacement
Classic Camaro — VATS resistor key. Most locksmiths say no; we can do it.
2019 Chevy Traverse LT — lost only key
LT can vary — VIN identification required
2022 Chevy Silverado LTZ — spare key
LTZ = proximity smart key on most builds
Chevrolet across Charlotte & Lake Norman
Silverado is Charlotte's contractor truck and lake truck. We regularly handle Silverado key calls from job sites in Mooresville and Concord — a contractor who leaves their only key on the dash during a long pour, or a subcontractor whose spare was left at home. At Lake Norman, Silverado owners losing keys at the boat ramp or campsite are a consistent pattern, especially on weekends.
Tahoe and Suburban are the dominant family vehicles in Davidson and Ballantyne. These neighborhoods run Tahoes and Suburbans as primary family haulers — losing the only key means the kids don't make practice, or a carpool strands four families. We carry Tahoe/Suburban inventory (all key types) and prioritize these calls accordingly.
Equinox is the most common compact SUV we see in University City and Mint Hill. Equinox key calls tend to be spare keys for second drivers, or lock-out-adjacent situations where a key was left locked inside.
Chevrolet and GMC share the same GM platform — if you drive a GMC Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, or Canyon, the same key systems and pricing apply. See our GMC key service page for GMC-specific information.

Call with year + model + trim (or VIN)
A Silverado LT and a Silverado High Country are completely different key jobs. Tell us your trim or VIN — we identify the exact system in 30 seconds. For older Chevys with VATS, year and model tells us most of what we need.

Flat-rate quote before dispatch
VATS jobs involve an on-vehicle resistor test — factored into the quote. Standard transponder and smart key jobs quoted upfront. One price before we leave the shop.

Mobile tech comes to you
Construction site in Mooresville, lake house in Cornelius, parking lot in Ballantyne — we come to you. Silverado and Tahoe owners especially appreciate not needing a tow for a key.

Key cut and programmed on-site
Using Autel IM608 and AVDI tooling. VATS jobs require the on-vehicle resistor identification step (adds ~10 min). Transponder and smart key jobs 20–45 min.
Mobile locksmith vs. Chevy dealer
Dealers charge more, require a tow if you have no working key, and often decline legacy VATS work. We quote before dispatch, come to you, and handle VATS.
Lost only key — 2020 Silverado High Country (Smart key)
Spare key — 2019 Tahoe LT (transponder/remote head)
VATS replacement — 1997 Camaro Z28
Chevrolet key FAQ
What is a VATS key and why is it unusual?
VATS stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System — a Chevrolet (and some Pontiac/Buick) technology from the late 1980s through early 2000s. Unlike modern transponder keys, VATS uses a physical resistor embedded in the key blade. The ignition module reads the resistor value electronically — there are 15 possible values. If the resistor doesn't match the vehicle's stored value, the engine cranks but won't start. Replacing a VATS key requires knowing the exact resistor value, which we identify with an on-vehicle test. Most locksmiths don't carry VATS blanks or equipment; we still do.
How do I know if my Silverado has a transponder or smart key?
Trim level is the most reliable indicator. Silverado WT, LT, and base LTZ builds typically use transponder or remote head keys. Silverado High Country, and some LTZ Z71 configurations, use smart proximity keys. The same model year truck can have either system depending on how it was ordered. VIN identifies the exact factory configuration in 30 seconds on the phone.
Can you do Chevy Corvette keys?
Corvette is case-by-case depending on generation. Most C5 (1997–2004) and C6 (2005–2013) Corvettes use VATS or standard transponder systems we handle. C7 (2014–2019) and C8 (2020+) involve increasingly complex security — call with your VIN and we'll tell you exactly where your specific Corvette lands.
What about Chevy Bolt and electric vehicles?
Chevy Bolt is case-by-case. Call with your VIN — we'll confirm on the phone whether your specific model year is within our current equipment range before dispatching.
Do you link to GMC service?
Yes — Chevrolet and GMC share the same GM platform. If you have a GMC Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, or Canyon, the same key systems apply. See our GMC service page for GMC-specific information.
What's the all-keys-lost process for a Tahoe?
All-keys-lost means no working key is present. For Tahoe and Suburban, we perform the security system re-enrollment on-site. Add $50–$150 to the base key type price. We quote the total before dispatch.
Is there a service fee if you can't help?
No. We're NASTF VSP credentialed and use current Autel IM608 tooling. We tell you on the phone whether your specific Chevrolet model and trim is something we can handle. If it's outside our current capability, you know before we dispatch — no trip charge.
