Four key generations, one technician

Cadillac's anti-theft key history is more complex than most domestic brands. The VATS resistor system from 1986 required an OHM meter before any key could be cut. PassKey III transponder replaced it around 2001. Remote head keys arrived on Escalade and CTS around 2007. Current Cadillac models — Escalade, XT5, XT6, XT4, CT5, CT4 — use Sensetera passive entry proximity. We handle all four generations.

As a GM brand, Cadillac shares key platform architecture with Chevrolet and GMC. The Escalade key system is closely related to the Tahoe and Yukon — same tooling, same procedure, different vehicle. This means our deep Chevy/GMC volume directly translates to Cadillac expertise. The Escalade is one of our most common luxury SUV calls in Charlotte, particularly from Lake Norman and the premium residential corridors of Ballantyne, Waxhaw, and South Charlotte.

VATS-era Cadillacs (DeVille, Eldorado, Seville, Fleetwood through approximately 2001) deserve a specific note: we measure the electrical resistance of your key or ignition cylinder with an OHM meter before cutting. There are 11 possible resistance values and guessing the wrong one means the car won't start. We don't guess.

Cadillac key types we work with

Cadillac spans four distinct key system generations. Which system your vehicle has depends on model year and trim — we identify it before quoting.

VATS Resistor Key (pre-2001)

Vehicle Anti-Theft System — a resistor pellet embedded in the key blade with one of 11 possible resistance values. The ignition control module measures the resistance; wrong value and the engine is disabled. VATS was GM's standard on DeVille, Eldorado, Fleetwood, and Seville from approximately 1986–2001. We measure the resistance of your cylinder before cutting — no guessing.

Pre-2001 DeVille, Eldorado, Seville, Fleetwood, Brougham.

Transponder Key (PassKey III / PassKey III+)

Chip embedded in the key head that communicates with the body control module. Replaced VATS on Cadillac models from approximately 2001–2009. Must be programmed — cut-only won't start the engine.

2001–2009 CTS, SRX, Deville DTS, older STS, older Escalade.

Remote Head Key

Lock/unlock/panic/remote start buttons integrated into the key head as a single unit. Found on Escalade and CTS generations from approximately 2007–2014, where the proximity option was reserved for upper trims.

2007–2014 Escalade base, older CTS-V, STS.

Cadillac Sensetera / Passive Entry (Proximity)

Cadillac's branded proximity key system — walk-up unlock, push-to-start. Same GM family architecture as Chevrolet and GMC proximity systems, branded under the Cadillac premium experience. Standard on all current Cadillac models.

2014+ Escalade, XT5, XT6, XT4, CT5, CT4 — all current Cadillac.

Don't know your key type? Tell us year + model + trim or your VIN. We identify VATS, transponder, remote head, or Sensetera in 30 seconds on the phone — before any commitment.

Cadillac key service across Charlotte & Lake Norman

Escalade is the dominant Cadillac call in Charlotte by a wide margin — its combination of full-size luxury and domestic nameplate makes it the vehicle of choice in premium residential pockets from Waxhaw and Ballantyne through SouthPark and across the Lake Norman waterfront. We see Escalade calls regularly from the lakefront communities of Cornelius, Mooresville, and Davidson where the full-size SUV is almost the standard family vehicle for larger families.

XT5 and XT6 are the mid-tier workhorses — showing up from South Charlotte neighborhoods, university-adjacent areas, and the inner-loop Myers Park and Dilworth communities. CT5 and CT4 sedans pull from SouthPark and Uptown professional demographics. Legacy DeVille, Eldorado, and Seville calls come in periodically from owners who kept their VATS-era vehicles running long past what most people expected.

Service area: Charlotte (all neighborhoods), Waxhaw, Ballantyne, SouthPark, Myers Park, Lake Norman, Cornelius, Mooresville, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Concord.

How Cadillac key replacement works

1

Call with year + model + trim (or VIN)

Cadillac's key system history spans VATS resistor (pre-2001), PassKey III transponder (2001–2009), remote head (some 2007–2014), and Sensetera proximity (2014+). Year alone doesn't tell the whole story — give us your trim or VIN and we identify the exact system in 30 seconds.

2

Flat-rate quote before dispatch

For VATS-era Cadillacs, we note upfront that the job requires resistance measurement — that's factored into the quoted price. No surprises. For proximity models, one price includes cut, program, and AKL adder if no working key is present.

3

Mobile tech comes to you

SouthPark, Lake Norman waterfront, Dilworth, Ballantyne, Waxhaw — anywhere in Charlotte metro. For all-keys-lost on an Escalade, we come to your driveway with everything needed. No tow.

4

Key cut, matched, programmed, and tested on-site

For VATS: we measure the resistance of your existing cylinder and cut to the matching pellet value. For proximity: NASTF VSP-credentialed Autel IM608 and AVDI tooling. Sensetera jobs 30–50 min. VATS jobs 20–35 min. AKL adds 20–40 min.

Cadillac dealer vs. mobile locksmith

Cadillac dealer service for lost keys means scheduling, possible tow, and premium pricing. We eliminate all three.

Lost only key — 2022 Escalade (Sensetera proximity)

Dealer: $400–$600 + dealer scheduling wait

Us: $200–$280 + AKL adder

Save $200–$320+

Spare — 2020 XT5 (Sensetera, working key present)

Dealer: $250–$350

Us: $125–$195

Save $100–$155

Pre-2001 DeVille VATS key — spare needed

Dealer: Often send out to locksmith anyway

Us: $95–$175

Faster + no dealer markup

Cadillac key FAQ

What is a VATS key and how do you handle it?+

VATS stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System — GM's resistor-key technology from approximately 1986 to 2001. The key blade contains a small resistor pellet with one of 11 possible electrical resistance values. The ignition control module measures the resistance when the key is inserted; wrong value and the engine is disabled. To cut a replacement, we measure the resistance value of your existing key or ignition cylinder using an OHM meter before cutting. This is a step many locksmiths skip — guessing the wrong value means the key won't start the car. We don't guess.

What is Sensetera and how does it differ from Cadillac proximity on older models?+

Sensetera is Cadillac's branded name for their passive entry / proximity push-to-start system on current models (2014+ Escalade, XT5, XT6, XT4, CT5, CT4). It uses the same GM family proximity architecture as the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon — same platform, same programming tooling. Older Cadillac proximity systems (some 2009-2013 Escalade upper trims) used an earlier generation of the same GM platform. Regardless of what Cadillac calls it, our tooling covers the full GM proximity progression.

Cadillac, Chevy, and GMC all share GM platforms. Does your tooling cover all three?+

Yes. The GM family — Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac — shares key platform architecture across overlapping generations. Our NASTF VSP-credentialed Autel IM608 tooling covers the full GM key progression from VATS through PassKey III through current Sensetera/passive entry proximity. If you have an Escalade, a Silverado, and a Yukon in the driveway, we service all three.

Can you do Escalade AKL (all keys lost)?+

Yes. Escalade AKL is one of our more common luxury SUV calls in Charlotte. For current Escalade (2015+), AKL means full Sensetera proximity re-enrollment on-site — adds $50–$150 and 20–40 minutes over the base proximity key price. We quote the total before dispatch. No tow needed.

What about CT5-V Blackwing or Escalade-V? Any key differences?+

V-series models use the same key platform as their standard counterparts — the Blackwing performance package changes the engine and chassis, not the immobilizer or key architecture. CT5-V Blackwing uses the same Sensetera proximity system as CT5 Premium Luxury. Same for Escalade-V — same Sensetera key as Escalade Platinum. VIN confirms before dispatch.

Do you handle SRX, CTS, and ATS — the discontinued models?+

Yes. SRX, CTS, and ATS are common in Charlotte from owners keeping them well-maintained. SRX (2004-2009) uses PassKey III transponder or early proximity depending on trim. SRX (2010-2016) uses GM proximity. CTS (2003-2019) varies from PassKey III to remote head to proximity depending on generation and trim. ATS (2013-2019) uses proximity. VIN confirms the exact generation.

Is there a service call fee if you can't help?+

No. We verify capability on the phone using your VIN before dispatch. If a specific build is outside our tooling window, we say so before anyone drives out — no trip charge.
