GM platform — from VATS to proximity
Buick's anti-theft key history follows the same GM progression as Chevrolet and Cadillac: VATS resistor (pre-1999), PassKey III transponder (2000–2008), remote head (some 2008–2012), and GM passive entry proximity (2013+). The Enclave, Envision, and Encore GX all use current GM proximity — the same architecture as the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain. Same tooling. Same procedure. Different badge.
Buick's discontinued lineup — LaCrosse, Verano, and Regal — still shows up regularly in our call queue. These vehicles were well-maintained, often by owners who kept them long after the nameplate was retired. LaCrosse from 2010–2016 uses GM proximity. Verano from 2012–2017 uses remote head or early proximity. Regal from 2011–2017 varies by trim. All are within our tooling coverage.
VATS-era Buicks (LeSabre, Park Avenue, Century, Riviera through approximately 1998) require OHM meter measurement before any key is cut. There are 11 possible resistance values — one wrong and the engine won't start. We measure first, cut second.
Buick key types we work with
Buick spans four GM key system generations. Which system your vehicle has depends on model year and trim — we confirm before quoting.
VATS Resistor Key (pre-1999)
Vehicle Anti-Theft System — a resistor pellet embedded in the key blade with one of 11 possible resistance values. GM used VATS on LeSabre, Park Avenue, Century, Riviera, and Electra from approximately 1986–1998. The ignition module checks the resistance on every start; wrong value disables the engine. We measure your cylinder's resistance with an OHM meter before cutting — no guessing.
Pre-1999 LeSabre, Park Avenue, Century, Riviera, Regal (some trims).
Transponder Key (PassKey III / PassKey III+)
Chip embedded in the key head that communicates with the body control module. Replaced VATS on Buick from approximately 2000–2008. Covers LaCrosse (2005–2008), Rendezvous, Terraza, and early Enclave (2008). Key must be programmed — a cut-only spare won't start the engine.
2000–2008 LaCrosse, Rendezvous, Terraza, Allure, early Enclave.
Remote Head Key
Lock/unlock/panic buttons built into the key head as a single unit. Found on mid-era Enclave, LaCrosse, and Verano trims from approximately 2008–2012, where the standard trim didn't include push-to-start. Must be cut and programmed.
2008–2012 Enclave (non-proximity trims), LaCrosse, Verano (some trims).
GM Passive Entry / Proximity Push-to-Start
Walk-up unlock and push-to-start. Same GM family architecture as Chevrolet and GMC proximity systems — shared platform, shared tooling. Standard on current Enclave, Envision, Encore GX, and all Enclave Avenir trim levels.
2013+ Enclave, 2016+ Envision, 2020+ Encore GX — all current Buick.
Don't know your key type? Tell us year + model + trim or your VIN. We identify VATS, transponder, remote head, or proximity in 30 seconds on the phone — before any commitment.

Buick key service across Charlotte & Lake Norman
Enclave is the dominant Buick call in Charlotte — the three-row family SUV that sits at the crossover of practical and premium. Enclave Avenir calls come from the Lake Norman waterfront, Cornelius, Mooresville, and the premium residential pockets of Waxhaw and Ballantyne. Envision calls come from south Charlotte and the inner-loop neighborhoods.
Discontinued model calls — LaCrosse, Verano, Regal — tend to come from owners who bought in 2012–2016 and maintained the vehicle well past the nameplate's retirement. These are often single-owner, low-drama service calls from clients who want straightforward, no-upsell help. We handle all of them.
Service area: Charlotte (all neighborhoods), Waxhaw, Ballantyne, SouthPark, Myers Park, Lake Norman, Cornelius, Mooresville, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Concord.
How Buick key replacement works
Call with year + model + trim (or VIN)
Buick's key history spans VATS resistor (pre-1999), PassKey III transponder (2000–2008), remote head (some 2008–2012), and GM proximity (2013+). Discontinued models like LaCrosse, Verano, and Regal are still common calls — same process, same tooling. VIN or year + model + trim identifies your system in 30 seconds.
Flat-rate quote before dispatch
For VATS-era Buicks, we note upfront that the job requires resistance measurement — factored into the quoted price. For proximity models, one price includes cut, program, and AKL adder if no working key is present. No surprises.
Mobile tech comes to you
Cornelius, Mooresville, SouthPark, Ballantyne, Waxhaw, Matthews, Concord, Huntersville — anywhere in Charlotte metro. Enclave calls come from the Lake Norman corridor regularly. No tow.
Key cut, matched, programmed, and tested on-site
For VATS: OHM meter to identify the resistance value, then cut to match. For proximity: NASTF VSP-credentialed Autel IM608 tooling. GM proximity jobs 30–50 min. VATS jobs 20–35 min. AKL adds 20–40 min.
Buick dealer vs. mobile locksmith
Buick dealer service for lost keys means scheduling, possible tow, and premium pricing. We eliminate all three.
Lost only key — 2023 Enclave Avenir (GM proximity)
Dealer: $350–$550 + dealer scheduling wait
Us: $200–$280 + AKL adder
Save $150–$270+
Spare — 2022 Envision (GM proximity, working key present)
Dealer: $250–$350
Us: $125–$195
Save $100–$155
2008 LaCrosse PassKey III — lost both keys
Dealer: Often send out to locksmith anyway
Us: $145–$195 + AKL adder
Faster + no dealer markup

Buick key FAQ
Does Buick share a key platform with Chevrolet and GMC?+
Yes. Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC are all General Motors brands and share key platform architecture across overlapping generations. The Enclave's key system is closely related to the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia — same platform, same programming tooling. Our high volume of Chevy and GMC work translates directly to Buick expertise. If you have an Enclave and a Silverado, we service both.
Can you handle Buick's discontinued models — LaCrosse, Verano, Regal?+
Yes. LaCrosse, Verano, and Regal were discontinued in 2017–2019 but remain common in Charlotte and the Lake Norman area. LaCrosse (2005–2009) typically uses PassKey III transponder; LaCrosse (2010–2016) uses GM proximity. Verano (2012–2017) uses remote head or early proximity depending on trim. Regal (2011–2017) uses remote head or proximity. VIN confirms the exact system before dispatch.
What is a VATS key and how does it affect older Buick models?+
VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) is GM's resistor-key technology used on Buick from approximately 1986–1998. The key blade has a resistor pellet with one of 11 possible electrical resistance values — wrong value and the engine won't start. To cut a replacement for a LeSabre, Park Avenue, Century, or Riviera from this era, we measure the resistance of your existing key or ignition cylinder with an OHM meter first. This is a step that matters — guessing the wrong resistance value wastes the key blank and the customer's time.
Can you do Enclave all-keys-lost?+
Yes. Enclave AKL is one of our more common SUV calls in the Lake Norman and north Charlotte area. For current Enclave (2013+ with GM proximity), AKL means full proximity re-enrollment on-site — adds $50–$150 and 20–40 minutes over the base proximity price. We quote the total before dispatch.
My Buick has a push-button start but I don't see a slot for the key — how does programming work?+
Buick's push-to-start proximity system uses radio frequency to detect the fob in your pocket or purse — there's no physical insertion point. To program a new fob, we use our Autel IM608 diagnostic tool connected to the OBD-II port under the dash. The fob is programmed electronically. If you have no working fob at all (all-keys-lost), we can still enroll the new fob, though it takes 20–40 minutes longer and adds an AKL fee.
Is there a service call fee if you can't help?+
No. We verify capability on the phone using your VIN before dispatch. If a specific build is outside our tooling window, we say so upfront — no trip charge for capability we don't have.
