What actually drives the price

The lock or key technology, not the drama of the situation. A lockout on a basic pin-tumbler deadbolt is quick, damage-free work. A smart proximity key for a 2022 SUV needs manufacturer-level programming equipment on the truck. That's why "how much is a locksmith" has no single answer — the honest answer is a short menu, like the table above.

Time of day — for many companies, but not for us. A lot of Charlotte locksmiths add a $50–$100 after-hours surcharge. We run 24/7 with no after-hours premium: 2 AM Saturday costs the same as 2 PM Tuesday.

Distance. We're based in Cornelius and cover the whole Charlotte metro — from Uptown and Ballantyne to Mooresville and Gastonia. Quotes already include the trip; there's no separate "service call fee" added at the door.

Lockout costs: car, house, office

A standard car lockout in Charlotte runs $99–$150 and takes 5–15 minutes of on-site work with air wedges and reach tools — no damage to the door or weather stripping. House lockouts are priced the same range; an office or storefront with commercial hardware starts at $119. If part of a key snapped off inside the cylinder, broken key extraction starts at $75.

Be wary of "$19 lockout" ads. That number is a phone-room bait rate — the tech "discovers" complexity at your door and the bill lands at $200+. We wrote a full guide on how to avoid locksmith scams, and the short version is: a legitimate company gives you a real number before dispatch and can name its NC license (ours is #3024).

Car key replacement costs

Car keys have the widest range because the technology varies so much by year and model:

Key type Typical total
Mechanical key (pre-2000s) $50–$100
Transponder key (chip in the head) $150–$180
Remote / flip key $175–$220
Smart proximity key $220–$320
Luxury / European smart key $300–$500

The dealer typically charges 2–3× those numbers and needs your car towed in; we cut and program on-site. Full breakdown by brand and key type in our car key replacement cost guide, or jump straight to your model — for example Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, or Ford F-150.

Rekey vs. changing locks

If you just moved in or a key went missing, you usually don't need new locks — rekeying at $55 per cylinder makes the old keys useless while keeping your existing hardware. Swapping the hardware itself starts at $85 per lock plus the new lock. Details in rekey vs. replace and what rekeying a house costs.

FAQ

How much does it cost for a locksmith to unlock your car in Charlotte? $99–$150 for nearly all vehicles, quoted exactly before the truck rolls. No after-hours surcharge, ever.

Why do locksmith prices vary so much between companies? Three reasons: bait-rate advertising (the $19 trap), after-hours surcharges, and dispatch networks that subcontract your call. A local licensed shop quoting flat rates up front removes all three.

Is it cheaper to call a locksmith or the dealer for a car key? A mobile locksmith is typically 50–75% cheaper than the dealer for the same OEM-grade key, and you skip the tow. The rare exceptions (a few brand-new luxury models) — we'll tell you on the phone if your car is one of them.

Do you charge a fee just to come out? No. The quote you get on the phone includes the trip anywhere in our service area.
