How to Replace Your Car Key Fob Battery: DIY Guide by Brand

ยท4 min readยทMy Locksmith Express Team

Replacing a key fob battery is the cheapest car repair you'll ever do: a $3โ€“5 coin cell and about five minutes. Roughly 70% of the "my fob stopped working" calls we take in the Charlotte / Lake Norman area turn out to be nothing more than a dead battery, so this is always the first thing to try โ€” even when the fob looks completely dead.

This guide covers the whole job: figuring out which battery your fob takes, opening the case without cracking it, and what it means if a fresh battery doesn't fix things.

Which battery does your key fob take?

Almost every fob uses a lithium coin cell, and the code is stamped right on the battery โ€” so the most reliable method is to open the fob and read the old cell. If you want to buy the battery before opening anything, these are the most common pairings we see in the field:

Brand Most common batteries
Toyota / Lexus CR2032, CR1632
Honda / Acura CR2032, CR1616
Ford / Lincoln CR2032, CR2450
Chevy / GMC / Buick CR2032
Nissan / Infiniti CR2025, CR2032
Hyundai / Kia CR2032
Jeep / Ram / Dodge CR2032
Subaru / Mazda CR2025, CR1620

Two things to know before you buy. First, the same model can use different fobs across trim levels and years, so treat the table as a starting point, not gospel โ€” the stamp on the old battery is the final answer. Second, batteries from the pharmacy checkout aisle are fine; you don't need a "premium" or dealer-branded cell. A fresh CR2032 is a fresh CR2032.

Opening the fob without breaking it

This is the step where DIY attempts go wrong, and it's almost always the same mistake: prying at the wrong spot with too much force.

  1. Slide out the emergency key blade first if your fob has one. The slot it leaves behind is usually the intended prying point.
  2. Find the seam notch. Run a fingernail along the edge seam โ€” most fobs have one small notch designed for a screwdriver tip.
  3. Wrap a flat-head screwdriver in tape (or use a plastic guitar pick / coin) and twist gently in the notch. The case should pop apart along the seam.
  4. Don't pry at the keyring hole. The plastic is thinnest there and cracks easily.

Flip-style keys and some smart fobs (many Toyota and Honda fobs, for example) have a small screw under a cover โ€” check for that before forcing anything.

Swapping the cell

Before you pop the old battery out, look at which side faces up โ€” on most fobs the + side faces the back cover, but not on all of them, and putting the cell in upside down is the most common reason a "new battery" seems dead. Press the new cell in flat, keep the small rubber gasket seated if your fob has one (it's the water seal), and snap the halves together until they click all the way around.

Test from a normal distance โ€” ten feet or so. If the fob works only when you're touching the door handle, the battery isn't the issue; the fob's transmitter is weak and the fob is on its way out.

New battery didn't fix it?

If a fresh battery (installed the right way up) doesn't bring the fob back, work through our key fob troubleshooting guide โ€” a weak 12V car battery and a lost pairing are the two next-most-common culprits, and both have DIY fixes.

If none of that works, the fob hardware or the car's receiver is the problem. We diagnose over the phone with your year, make, and model, and if you need a replacement we cut and program it on-site โ€” most fob replacements on US, Japanese, and Korean brands run $130โ€“$280, well under dealer pricing, with no tow involved.
