Which Car Keys Can a Locksmith Make (and Which Need the Dealer)?
Short answer: A qualified, NASTF-certified mobile locksmith can make and program car keys on-site for the large majority of cars on the road today β including most lost-all-keys situations β without a tow to the dealer. The exceptions are a handful of newer European models with locked-down encryption, where the dealer is currently the only option. Below is exactly where the line falls.
What decides whether a locksmith can do it
It comes down to the car's immobilizer/encryption system, which is mostly tied to brand and model year. For most brands, on-site programming works for all years. For a few European makes, the manufacturer locked down key programming after a specific year, so those newer cars need dealer-only "all keys lost" service.

If your car isn't on a "dealer-only" line above, a mobile locksmith can almost certainly handle it in your driveway.
Why this matters for your wallet
For the cars a locksmith can do, going mobile typically saves you a lot versus the dealer β no tow (a "no working key" tow alone is often ~$150), no dealership labor rate, and same-day service. See our full breakdown in Car Key Replacement Cost.
What we'll ask you on the phone
So we can confirm before anyone drives out:
- Year, make, and model
- Whether you have any working key, or all keys are lost
- The VIN (dash by the windshield, or the door-jamb sticker)
That lets us tell you up front whether it's an on-site job and the flat price β no guessing at your door. Browse your make on our car keys by brand pages, or get car key replacement details.
Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key if I lost all of mine?
Yes, for almost all brands (see the table). With proof of ownership and the VIN we can generate a new key even when no working key exists. The few dealer-only exceptions are newer Mercedes-Benz, VW, Land Rover, and Mini.
Do push-to-start smart keys need the dealer?
No β for the vast majority of brands a NASTF-certified locksmith programs smart keys on-site. Only the newer European models listed above require the dealer.
Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer for car keys?
Usually yes, often by a wide margin, mainly because there's no tow and no dealership labor rate. The gap is biggest on trucks and luxury trims.
How do I know if my car is "dealer-only"?
Tell us the year, make, and model and we'll confirm in seconds. The cutoffs above are the current real-world limits for on-site programming.
