Locked Out of Your Car? What to Do in the First 10 Minutes
It happens to almost everyone eventually: you slam the door, the keys are still inside, and you're standing on the curb. Before you panic (or pay way too much to whoever shows up first), here's exactly what to do.
In the first 60 seconds, check these three things
- Look for a spare. If a partner, parent, or roommate has a copy nearby, that's the fastest path. Skip the rest.
- Check every door and the trunk. It sounds obvious. In about one in five lockout calls we get, the customer hadn't tried the passenger or back doors yet.
- Smart key in your pocket? Some modern smart keys unlock the car when the fob is within a few feet. Try the door handle or trunk button again.
If none of those work, time to bring in help.
Roadside assistance vs locksmith vs dealer
| Option | When it makes sense | Typical wait | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roadside assistance (AAA, insurance) | You have coverage, no programming needed | 30β90 min | Often included |
| Mobile locksmith | Fast, no membership, all car types | 15β30 min | $65β$95 |
| Tow + dealer | You also need a new key cut | Half a day+ | $300+ |
If your roadside coverage is included with your insurance or car payment plan, it's worth a quick call first. If they can't help quickly (or you don't have coverage) a mobile locksmith is almost always faster and cheaper than towing.
When NOT to break a window
We see this a few times a month: someone breaks a window in frustration, then has to pay for the window AND the lockout service. A few situations where it might actually be justified:
- A child or pet is in danger (heat, cold, medical emergency): call 911 first; they often help open the door without damage
- A medical emergency where you need a key from inside immediately
In every other case, a 15-minute wait is worth saving $300+ on a window.
What a real lockout call looks like
When you call us:
- We confirm your make and model (we don't need it to unlock, just to bring the right tools)
- We dispatch the closest mobile unit. In Cornelius, Huntersville, Davidson, Mooresville, and Charlotte, that's usually 15β30 minutes.
- On arrival, the tech uses non-destructive entry tools designed for modern cars. No damage to the lock, door frame, or weather stripping.
- Pay only after the door opens.
Pricing in the Charlotte / Lake Norman area
- Car lockout: from $65 for standard sedans and SUVs.
- Trunk lockout: from $65, slightly more if there's no manual release.
- Newer trucks and full-size SUVs with tighter electronic seals: usually $85β$120, quoted on the call.
- European luxury vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche). We don't service car-key work on these brands. For a lockout only (no key program needed), call us anyway; if the door unlock is straightforward we may still be able to help.
No trip fees, no "after-hours" surcharge in our standard service area. The price we quote on the phone is the price you pay.
