Door Chains and Guards: What Actually Works
A door chain is one of the most common pieces of security hardware in American homes and one of the least effective. That is not a reason to rip yours out, but it is a reason to know what it does. A chain buys you a conversation through a partly open door. It does not resist a determined shove, because the chain is rarely the weak link: the two short screws holding its plate to soft jamb trim are.
If you want the short version: install it properly, mount it into the framing, and understand that its job is visibility, not resistance. If you want resistance, there is better hardware.

The honest hierarchy: a swing bar guard mounted into the stud beats a chain by a wide margin for a few dollars more, and neither is a substitute for a properly installed deadbolt.
Why they fail (and it is always the same reason)
Every failed guard we have seen came off the frame with the screws still in the plate. The hardware held; the wood did not. Do that first, and every other piece of hardware on the door gets better at its job.
The second most common mistake is travel length. A chain that lets the door swing four or five inches is not a barrier; it is a handle for someone to reach through. Two to three inches is enough to see and speak.
Who actually benefits from one
- Anyone who answers the door to strangers regularly — deliveries, service calls, elderly residents living alone. The chain's real value is the confidence to open the door two inches instead of not at all.
- Renters, because a guard installs without altering the lock and comes off cleanly at move-out. Check the lease first: most allow it, some do not.

Who does not benefit: anyone treating the chain as their security plan. If that is where the budget is going, spend it on the frame instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will a door chain stop someone kicking the door?
No. Neither will most guards against a full kick, though a stud-mounted swing bar does far better than a chain. Kick resistance comes from the frame, the strike, and the bolt, in that order.
Can I install one on a metal door?
Yes, but the fastening changes: self-tapping screws for a hollow metal door, and ideally through-bolting where the frame allows. Predrilling matters more here, and a stripped hole in steel is harder to recover than one in wood.
Do these damage the door?
They leave screw holes, which patch easily. That is why they are the standard rental-friendly option. The one thing to avoid is mounting into the very edge of the trim, which splits and looks bad long before it fails.
Is a smart lock a better answer?
Different problem. Smart locks solve key management and access logging; they do nothing while you are physically standing at a partly open door.
