Lost or broken Mazda MX-5 Miata keys? We come to you with a fully equipped mobile unit and cut and program your new key on-site — typically in 25–40 minutes. No tow needed. Up to 75% cheaper than what the dealer charges.

Charlotte's Mazda owners skew toward the premium end of the mainstream segment — people who chose a CX-5 over a CR-V specifically for the driving feel. CX-5 and Mazda3 lead our Mazda call volume; CX-30 is growing fast as Mazda's entry crossover. The most consistent Mazda service pattern is used-market purchases where the seller kept the spare key — Mazda's dealer key prices are high enough that the second key feels like an asset worth holding.

Mazda's SKYACTIV-era smart keys (2014–current) program via Autel IM608 with Mazda licensing. Pre-2014 Mazda3 and older CX-7/CX-9 used a basic transponder or flip key with different programming requirements. Mazda of South Charlotte (Pineville, 28134) quotes $300–$450 for smart key replacement with programming. We charge $220 at your location — no appointment, no tow.

Common issues we see with Mazda MX-5 Miata in Charlotte

  • Key left in open cockpit with top down — the NC/ND Miata has no hidden stowage; a key in the cupholder or center tray is accessible from outside when the top is folded; standard pre-autocross paddock routine is to pocket the key
  • NC generation KPU41788 flip-key hinge wear — the fold-out blade pivot fatigues after years of use; blade becomes loose but key still functions electronically; shell swap available without reprogramming if chip is intact
  • ND WAZSKE13D01 vs D03 blank confusion on used car purchases — both years say 'ND Miata' in online listings; the two FCC IDs are not interchangeable; confirm the year before purchasing an aftermarket key for a used ND
  • SCCA/track use increases key-at-venue calls — helmet bag, paddock gear, or car-to-car access during timing events; we can dispatch to Concord-area venues

Frequently Asked Questions

I dropped my MX-5 key at the paddock during an SCCA autocross at zMAX. Can you come to Concord?+

Yes — zMAX Dragway in Concord is about 25 minutes from our Cornelius base and within our standard service area. Call us as soon as you realize the key is gone. For an ND Miata (2016+), we cut and program a new smart key on-site in 25–35 minutes: $220 for WAZSKE13D01 (2016–2019) or WAZSKE13D03 (2020+). For an NC Miata (2006–2015), KPU41788 flip key: $175. We'll need the VIN and a photo of your registration. Same flat rate regardless of whether you're in a driveway in Charlotte or a paddock in Concord.

What's the difference between NC and ND Miata keys? I'm buying a used one.+

Completely different systems. NC Miata (2006–2015) uses the KPU41788 — a flip-key with a fold-out metal blade and 4 remote buttons, very similar to a Ford or Chrysler flip key of the same era. ND Miata (2016+) uses a WAZSKE-family smart proximity fob — no visible metal blade, push-to-start, touchless entry. They look nothing alike. If a seller offers an 'extra key' for a used ND, physically confirm it's a flat proximity fob with no fold-out blade — a KPU41788 will not start an ND even if it fits in the door.

I'm worried about leaving my Miata top-down with my key visible. Is there anywhere to hide it?+

There isn't — neither the NC nor ND Miata was designed with a concealed key stowage spot. The glove box locks with the ignition key on the NC, so that works as a compartment if you're parking with the top up; on the ND the door pocket isn't lockable. The practical solution at track events or open-air venues: take the key out of the car entirely and put it in your pocket, a belt clip, or a ziplock inside your helmet bag. For valet situations, use a valet key cut to just the door lock if your NC has one — it won't start the car.
