Jeep Wrangler Key Replacement
Wrangler key calls run different from everything else we service. Half are outdoor situations — a fob that went into the water at an Uwharrie creek crossing, a key ring that dropped into the mud at Crowders Mountain trailhead, or a JK that got driven all day without doors and came home without the key. The other half are all-keys-lost on used JK purchases from the Jeep enthusiast classifieds, where the seller kept both originals. Wrangler calls are consistent enough that we stock JK and JL blanks in every truck.
The key hardware changed completely between generations. The 2007–2018 JK uses the OHT692713AA remote head key — the transponder blade is permanently fixed to the remote body in one rigid unit. The 2018–2024 JL switched to the OHT1130261 flip remote, where the blade folds into the body. The 2018 model year overlaps: final-year JK units take OHT692713AA, first-year JL units take OHT1130261. We verify by VIN before dispatch.

Common issues we see with Jeep Wrangler in Charlotte
- JK OHT692713AA key ring post breaks from heavy keychain load — remote head key post fatigues when Mopar trail gear or overlanding accessories are hung on the ring; shell swap available if blade and chip are intact
- Fob submersion at Uwharrie OHVA water crossings or creek trails — water shorts the battery contacts; rinse with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, let dry 24–48 hours, replace battery. Corroded circuit board means a new fob.
- Key ring loss in doors-off operation — JK and JL Wranglers driven without doors lose the side-pocket key holder; key rings slide off the seat or sill into the trail without the owner noticing until the engine stops
- JL OHT1130261 flip remote battery drains in 12–18 months — shorter than most key fobs; CR2032 replacement is straightforward but the short cycle catches owners off guard
- All-keys-lost on used JK from enthusiast classifieds — Jeep private-sale buyers receive the car without a spare more often than any other brand; NASTF erase and two new keys on-site
Why not the Jeep dealer?
Charlotte-area Jeep dealers quote $250–400 for a JK remote head key (OHT692713AA) with programming, or $275–425 for the JL flip remote (OHT1130261). Dealer key appointments typically book out several days, and most require you to bring the Wrangler in. We charge $175 for either blank, cut and programmed at your location — including trail parking lots. All-keys-lost JK Wranglers add $50–100 for the NASTF erase step; a second key is strongly recommended when you're doing AKL.
