Car Key Replacement Cost: Locksmith vs. Dealer (2026)

Lost your car keys? Find out why calling a mobile locksmith is faster and 50% cheaper than the dealership.

Losing your car keys is stressful. If you have a modern car (1998 or newer), you likely have a “Transponder Chip” inside the key head. This means you can’t just cut a metal key at the hardware store; it must be programmed to the car’s computer.

The biggest question we get is: “Should I go to the dealer or call a locksmith?”

Car Key Replacement Costs by Key Type & TechnologyCommon Questions

What if I lost ALL my keys?

If you have no spare, the dealer requires you to tow the car to them to prove ownership and program the computer. A locksmith does not need a tow. We drive to your car, use your VIN number to cut a new key on-site, and plug our computer into your dashboard to program it.

Can I buy a cheap key on Amazon/eBay?

⚠️ Warning: We generally advise against this. Keys bought online often have the wrong chip frequency or are already “locked” to another vehicle. Many locksmiths will refuse to cut/program customer-supplied keys because if they fail, we can’t guarantee the work. It is safer to buy the key from the technician.

Does my insurance cover lost keys?

Standard liability insurance does not. However, if you have comprehensive coverage or a specific “Roadside Assistance” add-on, they may reimburse you for a portion of the cost.
